Low-temperature cracking research in the news

January 2006
From the Pioneer Press

Mihai Marasteanu, an assistant professor in the University of Minnesota's civil engineering department and the principal investigator of a national pooled-fund study investigating low-temperature cracking in asphalt pavements, is quoted in the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the proliferation of potholes in the Twin Cities.

Beware, the pothole boom: rides are rougher these days on Twin Cities roads, thanks partly to the warm winter (Pioneer Press, Jan. 12, 2006; linked with permission)

The results of the pooled-fund study should be available next year. In the meantime, Marasteanu advises that pothole crews dry and clean holes before patching. He also said that transportation officials should consider cutting and filling larger sections of pavement to help the repairs last longer.

In a related piece, Mn/DOT illustrates the formation of potholes with diagrams, photos, and video clips on its Web site: A Recipe for Potholes.
